General Overview
The Georgia Performance
Standards (GPS) at the high school level does not put a lot of significance in
exploring with three-dimensional geometry. Much of the emphasis at the
secondary level is primarily concerned with the understanding of spheres and/or
planes. Three-dimensional geometry has a much higher emphasis in the lower
grades (Grades K-8) where a solid foundation for geometrical ideas is to be formed. However,
many of the ideas that are developed at the lower grades can be extended and
enhanced greatly at the secondary level. For example, translational geometry, a
topic of considerable study in the elementary grades can be further studied in
high school with transformations of solids.
